Season affects safari trips more than almost any other destination decision. Wildlife concentrates differently, camps open and close, and rates move sharply between periods.
Dry season — roughly June to October
Vegetation thins and wildlife gathers near water, which makes viewing more reliable. This period includes the Mara River crossings in the Masai Mara. It is also the busiest and most expensive time.
Green season — roughly March to May
Long rains bring lush landscapes, dramatic skies and lower rates, with some camps closing. Viewing is still good but less concentrated.
Calving season — January to February
The southern Serengeti sees large numbers of newborn wildebeest and high predator activity, in generally pleasant weather.
