An International Driving Permit is a standardised translation of your existing licence. It does not replace your licence — you carry both — and it is only meaningful where the destination recognises it.
Some countries require one by law, some rental companies require one regardless, and in others it is simply useful if you are stopped or need to present identification.
What to check
- Check the destination's requirement before you book a rental car
- Check your rental company's own policy separately
- Obtain the permit before departure — it cannot be issued abroad
- Carry your original licence with it at all times
