Multi-city trips go wrong in the arithmetic. Every additional city adds a travel half-day, a check-in, and an evening spent finding your bearings instead of enjoying them.

The rule of thumb

  • One city per three days of trip length, at most
  • Minimum two nights anywhere — three if the city is large
  • Order cities geographically and fly open-jaw to avoid backtracking
  • Use trains where the journey is under about five hours

Ordering the route

Put the largest city first while your energy is highest, and finish somewhere slower. Arriving into one airport and departing from another usually costs little more and saves a full day.
